Reading Is So Essential
R.I.S.E.

We here at Altamont Creek are working to extend the reading programs currently offered
at our school. The reading program currently includes such programs as Read Naturally
and Junior Great Books.

Read Naturally is a program that works with struggling readers to help them achieve
reading fluency. This program is more of a one on one program. Junior Great Books is
a program that takes our more advanced readers and helps them to explore the
meanings behind each work by discussing the material in a group setting.

In order to serve more of our student population, we need volunteers to come into the
classrooms at each grade level to work with the students in these programs. This would
be a year-long program for 1-2 hours each week. The staff will work to have all of our
volunteers trained at the beginning of the next school year. This would be time that is
spent in addition to any time you may already volunteer in the classrooms. By
volunteering you will be supporting reading improvement at all levels. If you do not feel
comfortable working with the children, we will need help in preparing materials and in
other areas. If you know of a grandparent or another retired person who would enjoy
volunteering in this setting please pass this information along to them. The more
volunteers we have the more children that can benefit from this program We can make
a difference in a young reader's life and AItamont Creek will be a school of fantastic
readers!
